Scotsman article backs A9 freight switch to rail

A radical upgrade of the largely single-track Perth-Inverness railway could take up to 300 lorries a day off the A9, says an article by David Spaven of the Rail Freight Group in today’s Scotsman. Spaven’s piece reveals that the new 50mph limit for HGVs on single-carriageway sections of the A9 is being driven by “operational benefits” rather than safety – and the double whammy of faster lorries and A9 dualling poses a “catastrophic” threat to freight on rail unless investment in the Highland Main Line is prioritised.
